Frequency and consequences of disasters in California.

Severe fires, winter storms, earthquakes, storms, droughts and wildfires are very common on the West Coast.


Forest fires and heat waves are the most common and destructive natural disasters. In recent years, the state has averaged more than 7,800 fires per year, destroying more than 1,223,000 acres of land and 1,270 structures.

The USGS estimates that approximately 10,000 earthquakes occur in Southern California each year. Other estimates put it at one earthquake every three minutes - or more than 175,000 earthquakes per year!

Sacramento County has an average disaster risk of 44%. Over the past 20 years, the county has declared 18 natural disasters, most of which were associated with severe storms. 19% of Sacramento County has moderate or higher wildfire hazard potential, while the average earthquake risk of 46% is moderate.
